New Quirky.com Keiro compact food grinder idea
Sunday, August 8, 2010 0:55It’s interesting how your outlook on the environment can evolve so innocuously after having kids. Soon after Tyler was born in 2006, Yvonne and I turned a much more careful eye towards food product ingredients. What we took for granted for ourselves became an internal debate on what was best for our child to consume. This evolved over the next several years into a compelling desire to purchase organic wherever possible and to frequent the local farmers’ markets in Sunnyvale and neighboring Mountain View.
These weekend trips are fast becoming a family tradition and have helped introduce, Tyler, now 4, and Toby, almost 2 years old, to the diversity of fruits and vegetables available here in California. It is particularly apparent how lucky we are to have such diverse farmers’ markets year round when my parents visit from Colorado… Californians are indeed fortunate!
From supporting local organic farmers, it’s been a natural progression to start poking around with composting. We had an unused half wine barrel lying around the backyard that we decided to turn into an outdoor compost pile. By no means experts in composting, we’ve diligently collected food scraps… mostly from the kids’ eating fruits and vegetables… well mostly fruits… and layered those in with dirt, coffee grounds and grass and leaf clippings.
We’ve been using a counter-top plastic trash can but one of our major complaints is that fruit flies can easily slip in between the swing lid and prodigiously reproduce in a very short period of time. Another complaint is that we have to cut up larger pieces of food scraps.
This weekend I stumbled upon a Quirky.com idea for a compact food grinder with charcoal filter. It’s not in production yet, but I signed up for one. Hopefully, they’ll reach their minimum threshold to get these products to market. Pretty nifty idea. My lingering concern is around how to clean out the collecting vessel… then again, I can always do what I’m doing now and line the vessel with a plastic bag.
